Chisinau, five centuries of history

Five centuries of history of Chisinau city can be seen at an exhibition of charters mounted at the Chisinau City History Museum. The oldest charter dates from the 15th century and is a copy. The original is kept at the State Archive in Warsaw, Poland, IPN reports.

Chisinau City History Museum director Valeria Suruceanu said the project “Cultural-Historical Inheritance of Chisinau was conceived on the occasion of the organization of the first edition of the festival “I Welcome you, Chisinau”, the promotion of the cultural heritage being one of the priorities. “Within this project, we cooperated with the National Museum of History of Moldova, the National Museum of Ethnography and Natural History and the Central Scientific Library “Andrei Lupan”. Currently, most of the documents that refer to the history of Chisinau are kept in archives in Romania, Russia, Ukraine, Poland. The copy of the Charter compiled on July 17, 1436, concerning the first documentary attestation of Chisinau, whose original is kept at the Central Archives of Historical Records in Warsaw, holds special interest at the exhibition,” stated the museum’s director.

The exhibits include land and settlement concession documents, urbanistic plans that show the historical value of Chisinau and documents signed by the Ruler of Moldova Constantin Movilă.

Culture Division head Valentina Volontir said this festival promotes the cultural values. “We also need culture and should encourage the people of arts, specialists in the promotion of the tangible and intangible cultural heritage. The exhibition at the Chisinau City History Museum provides valuable information about the attestation and development of the city, which we should know so as to cultivate a feeling of pride in our descendants,” Valentina Volontir stated for IPN.

The exhibition can be visited until August 20 inclusive.
