A number of parishioners of the Saint Blessed Mother Matrona Church said the head of the Chisinau Electric Transport Company Gheorghe Morgoci didn’t yet give them the 300,000 lei promised for the reconstruction of the wooden church that burned in February 2011.

In a news conference at IPN, the parishioners said the wooden Saint Blessed Mother Matrona Church that is situated in the Park “La izvor” was 90% destroyed in a fire. The examinations showed it was arson. The Chisinau City Hall ordered that the church be rebuilt with money from the municipal reserve fund and from donations. The local authorities transmitted 102,000 lei to the church.

The Chisinau Electric Transport Company also pledged to contribute to the reconstruction of the church. Gheorghe Morgoci said the employees’ salary for a day will be retained. Sources in the company said that a sum of about 300,000 lei was collected, but it is two years since then and the money hasn’t been yet passed on to the church. According to the parishioners, the church’s bishop received only 10,000 lei from Gheorghe Morgoci, who told him that this is the sum collected from the workers.

The parishioners submitted petitions to the Chisinau Electric Transport Company, the National Anticorruption Center and the Chisinau City Hall, asking that the situation be clarified. They demand that Gheorghe Morgoci transfer the money collected from the employees and explain why he didn’t do this yet. The mayor is asked to monitor the situation, while the National Anticorruption Cente to investigate the case and establish whether it is an economic offense or a technical problem in the process of transferring the money.
