Former minister of justice Fadei Nagacevschi, who was proposed by mayor Ion Ceban for deputy mayor of the capital city, wasn’t confirmed by the Chisinau Municipal Council. Only 23 municipal councilors of 51 voted in favor, IPN reports.
The mayor’s proposal was supported only by the Socialist, Communist and Democratic MPs. The councilors of the Party of Action and Solidarity, of the Party “Dignity and Truth Platform”, of the Liberal Party and others abstained from voting or voted against. Some of the local councilors argued Fadei Nagacevschi is politically affiliated and suggested that the mayor should assumed responsibility for this appointment.
The municipality of Chisinau has four deputy mayors. One of the posts fell vacant following the dismissal of Victor Chironda.
Under the law on the local public administration, the deputy mayors are elected by the Chisinau Municipal Council by a majority of votes, at the suggestion of the mayor. If the draft decision is excluded from the agenda during two consecutive meetings or does not garner the necessary number of votes, the mayor can name the deputy mayor by an order that is submitted to the Council for familiarization.
