The Chisinau Circus will be reopened. Even if the building wasn’t fully renovated, the artists are already engaged in rehearsals and will stage the first performance in several months. The performances will be presented in the small hall. The information was confirmed for IPN by the Circus’s manager Andrei Locoman.

Deputy Minister of Culture Gheorghe Postica said the works to repair the small hall are covered by the Circus. “The institution is independent. We will see how they manage to lay out the small hall,” he stated.

The head of the Circus’s Administration Board Aliona Strambeanu said the full reopening of the Circus will not be possible without a public-private partnership for renovation and equipment.

The Circus was closed in 2004 for extensive repairs. The Government intended to allocate money from the state budget and to attract private investors. In 2008, the Circus was leased out to a Cypriot company for a 29-year-period. The company pledged to repair the building, but didn’t fulfill its commitments. In February 2010, the Prosecutor General’s Office filed a civil lawsuit, asking nullifying the contract. On March 31, 2011, the Economic Court of Appeals invalidated the contract. The Circus remains on the list of facilities that will be privatized.
