A landfill site has formed near Chisinau’s suburban village of Truseni, which, according to acting mayor Ruslan Codreanu, could degenerate into big trouble for the city. After visiting the site, he ordered that no garbage trucks were to be allowed access until further clarifications. Moreover, Codreanu said he would petition the prosecutors to investigate, IPN reports.
The site was public property before being sold into private hands. Codreanu says has been trying for a week now to find out who the new owners are, along with other details of the transaction, but no answers have been given yet. Pollutants are dumped here besides conventional waste. “I saw it with my own eyes when two weeks ago a truck dumped waste here from a spirit distillery, which is highly toxic”, said Codreanu. According to people living nearby, the site has been used as a garbage dump for about a year and half now.
The acting mayor says that, as long as the local authorities or the municipal ones know nothing about any authorization for the site, “there is room for suspicion” that it could be illegal. The Prosecutor’s Office will be asked to investigate and the Environment Inspection will be petitioned to take water and soil samples.
