The demographic situation in the municipality of Chisinau in 2021 was determined by the 5.0% decrease in the birth rate and the 17.7% increase in the death rate. The number of marriages and divorces grew by 42.8% and, 7.7%, respectively, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.
Provisional data show that 6,846 babies were born in 2021, a 5.0% decline on a year before.
The number of deaths was 9,150, up 17.7% on 2020. Fifty-three children died before turning a year, down 7.0% on a year before.
As many as 5,567 marriages were registered in the municipality of Chisinau last year, up 42.8% on 2020. According to court decisions, the number of officially registered divorces was 2,461, up 7.7%.
A report by the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection points to considerable discrepancy between socioeconomic development and demographic development by regions. This is one of the main problems of demographic security.
The population of marginal territories declines at a fast pace as a result of the negative natural growth and of the migration flow. Even if the districts that are situated close to the municipality of Chisinau have a higher score, their demographic and economic potential depends on the marginal districts, primarily due to the migration of the people of working age.
