The Chisinau City Hall’s lawyers will formally ask Parliament to increase penalties for littering. Also, the municipality has empowered district offices and the amenities department to issue tickets in a bid to curb littering, acting Mayor Ruslan Codreanu announced during the City Hall’s ordinary meeting today.

“I have a favor to ask of the district heads and the amenities department, let’s start being stricter about issuing fines. It’s outright disrespectful when we or volunteers, or students that respond to our call, have to collect the litter after someone. Our city will be clean when everybody understands that it’s easier not to litter than to actually clean it up”, declared the acting mayor.

Codreanu added that the size of the proposed fines is yet to be established by the legal department.

The acting mayor also explained that Friday’s ordnance empowers district head offices and the amenities department to issue tickets and fines for offenses that include vandalism, littering, and failure to collect waste, as well as offenses like violence against animals, unauthorized constructions, and failure to observe street vending and advertising rules.
