Chisinau authorities considering street name change to honor Vieru

Renasterii Boulevard /the Boulevard of Revival/ in Chisinau could change its name to the Boulevard of Renasterii “Grigore Vieru” under a municipal initiative. “We came with this idea, which was accepted in principle by the Mayor (Dorin Chirtoaca) as well as Mihai Cimpoi (the president of the Moldovan Writers Union)”, city councilor Oleg Cernei told Info-Prim Neo. “I don't think Grigore Vieru would want a conflict to break out because of a street name change. This thing is disregarded by those who propose that Pushkin Street be renamed to Grigore Vieru”, said the councilor. On January 22, at the next meeting of the Chisinau City Council, Cernei will put forward the proposal. “Today we will discuss the initiative at the Writers Union Board. And I think the Board will appreciate it. A bust of the poet will also be erected”, Mihai Cimpoi confirmed. The body vested with the authority to change street names in Chisinau is the City Council, while the Government has the power to install busts and monuments.
