Chisinau administration provides by 10,000 lei to victims of April 2009 events

One hundred of the persons who had been maltreated in police stations in April 2009 will receive by 10,000 lei from the Chisinau City Hall. Though the number of victims of those events is much higher, Mayor General Dorin Chirtoaca said aid will be provided to the persons included in the database of the Rehabilitation Center for Torture Victims “Memoria”, which provided psychological and medical services to the victims, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The money is designed to cover the costs incurred by the 100 persons. It is not some kind of recompense for those who destroyed and devastated the buildings. Some of these persons have not taken part in the protests. They are accidental victims,” said Dorin Chirtoaca. He also said that the decision to provide financial assistance to the victims of the April 2009 events was taken after a meeting with persons who were ill-treated in police stations. Some of them are unable to continue their studies or work. The 1 million lei will be allocated from the municipal reserve fund. Dorin Chirtoaca said the persons who were not included in the database of the Center “Memoria” but want to benefit from assistance must provide documents confirming that they were maltreated and underwent treatment. According to the official data of the Chisinau City Hall, about 300 persons were maltreated in police stations during the April 2009 events.
