The Chisinau City Hall requests the Government and Parliament to empower municipal subdivisions to impose fines on persons who throw waste in unauthorized places, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“The local authorities in the U.S. put fines if the lawn is not mowed at the expected time. Unfortunately, there are uneducated persons who drop litter in the street even if they are warned against doing so. The fines for throwing garbage in forbidden places should be put by the local authorities. We can clean the Byk River every day, but will not achieve results,” Mayor of Chisinau Dorin Chirtoaca said in Monday's meeting of City Hall officials.
According to the mayor, the district heads' offices should be entitled to put fines for garbage.
From the start of this year, the municipal police have drawn up about 200 reports over waste throwing in unauthorized places. The district heads' offices issued 340 warnings. The warnings and the reports are submitted to the National Ecology Agency, which is the only institution that can put fines in this case. Only three persons have been penalized this year so far.
The fine for throwing waste in unauthorized places is 400-500 lei for individuals and 1,000-2,000 lei for economic entities.
