There is now a big discrepancy between the political class and the people in Moldova. The political class created in society an authoritarian state, political police, submissive institutions and obedient media outlets and thus we have a captured state, Chiril Motpan, secretary general of the Political Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” (PPPDA), said in the public debate “Quality of the political class: importance, current state and ways of improvement” that was the 78th installment of the series “Developing political culture by public debates”, staged by IPN News Agency and Radio Moldova.
Chiril Motpan gave as example the European states, where the political class is built during many years. The shortage of qualified politicians is felt in Moldova. This generates lack of communication between the government and the extraparliamentary parties. The replacement of the political class is indispensable given that the situation now is absolutely detrimental to society.
As to the mixed-member electoral system, the PPPDA secretary general said this is disastrous for the Republic of Moldova. He gave as example Romania, which had this system, but changed it later. He noted that the PPPDA proposed a variant of electoral system based on ‘open lists’, which means that any citizen can assess the performance or the candidates put on party lists.
“Today, we continue to maintain that the mixed electoral system is not unfavorable for the Republic of Moldova because it will enable to continue this bustle in the Moldovan political class and will give chances only to those who are in power, not yet to the opposition parties, and not because there are no good and very good people in these parties, but because of the stiff competition against the financial background and owing to the influence exerted by the system on persons,” stated Chiril Motpan.
In this connection, he noted that members of the PPPDA have their businesses closed and are forced to defect from the Platform to the Democratic Party. “These are premeditated acts conducted against the leaders of the Platform. We do not accept this mixed system because at least now it is not advantageous to the people and a number of criteria should be defined, such as transparency, professionalism and integrity. The mixed system remains a problem for Moldova and this was also noted by the European Parliament,” said the politician.
