A girl of almost two from Zarnesti, Cahul, was operated after she penetrated her palate with a pencil. Oleg Creciun, head of the Emergency Medicine Department of the Cahul District Hospital, has told IPN that the girl was running and fell on the pencil.

The parents weren’t in the room when the incident happened. The doctor said that dozens of children suffer injuries because of the irresponsibility of the adults, who leave dangerous objects within the children’s reach. The accidents can be prevented. The pens, pencils and other sharp objects should be hidden from children under five.

The girl from Zarnesti was rushed to the district hospital with haemorrhage and was transferred to the National Children’s Hospital “Emilian Cotaga” by the Aviasan service the same day. Paediatric surgeon Silvia Railean, of the Chisinau hospital, said the girl was operated immediately under general anaesthesia and is now receiving treatment.

More than 33,000 children need medical care as a result of accidents at home every year. According to the Health Ministry’s National Health Management Center, 60 children younger than five died last year in home accidents
