A four-year-old child died and another one remains in a critical state in the hospital after they ate mushrooms. The child’s mother was also hospitalized. She is now at the Saint Trinity Hospital in Chisinau. The family, which is from Floresti district, reportedly collected mushrooms in the wood.

Spokesman for the Mother and Child Institute Maxim Cazacu has told IPN that the two children were brought to the Institute on July 9 with vomiting, headache and diarrhea. The child aged four died in the evening of July 12, while the other child is in a critical, but stable state.

Contacted by IPN, Adrian Pislaru, division head at the National Toxicological Center of the Saint Trinity Hospital, said the woman was hospitalized in a very serious state. She feels better now. The children’s father refused to be hospitalized.

According to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Social Protection, 41 cases of mushroom poisoning were recorded so far this year. Seven of the poisoned persons were children. Among the symptoms of mushroom poisoning are vomiting, diaper, nausea, delirium and general weakness. To avoid such cases, the mushrooms should be bought only from authorized retail outlets and should be prepared appropriately. The edible mushrooms can become toxic if they are old and look altered.
