Child dies after falling under ice

A 12-year-old boy died after he fell under the ice when playing. He went skating together with two friends of his, who could not save him, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, the tragedy happened on the afternoon of December 9 at a lake in “Valea Gastelor” Park in Chisinau. The rescuers recovered the body at a distance of about 25 meters from the bank. The Civil Protection and Emergencies Service warns the parents not to allow the children go alone to play near lakes. The ice towards the middle of lakes, ponds and rivers is thinner than near the bank. Also, the layer of ice under the snow is much thinner, with the holes left in the ice after fishing posing an increased danger. Rescuers recommend that the person who falls under the ice should remain calm and call for help, trying slowly to get onto the edge of the ice, and then to crawl towards the bank.
