The Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova Ion Chicu tendered the Government’s resignation in a move to trigger the process of calling snap parliamentary elections. The announcement was made by Premier Chicu in a press briefing on December 23, alongside incumbent President Igor Dodon and Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi, IPN reports.

Ion Chicu said that later today he will have a meeting with President-elect Maia Sandu to discuss the further activity of the interim Government so as to ensure the functionality of the state institutions and the country in general.

“I thank all the citizens who, during this very difficult year, showed understanding, worked and helped the Republic of Moldova to deal with this difficult period,” stated Ion Chicu. He thanked his colleagues from governmental, public institutions, from the local public authorities and the MPs who supported the Government.

Parliament Speaker Zinaida Grechanyi said that as the Cabinet decided to resign, today’s sitting of Parliament, where a motion of no confidence against the Chicu Government was to be debated, will not take place as the subject is no longer topical. The Parliament sitting to inaugurate President-elect Maia Sandu will take place tomorrow, starting at 11am.

“After a very long period of time, this year we ultimately had proper cooperation between the Government, presidential administrator and Parliament both vertically and horizontally. It is very important that these three branches of the power work in the same direction. It happened so this year, 2020, which was a difficult one and the Government, enjoying the plenary support of the MPs, not all of them surely, managed to cope with the developments,” stated the Speaker.

Igor Dodon said the Cabinet’s decision to resigned is an assumed one and wasn’t taken under the pressure of the censure motion or of protests. “I thank the governmental team, the Prime Minister for their verticality, courage and professionalism with which they dealt with this year’s serious challenges. No government during the last 10-15 years could cope with a number of problems simultaneously during a year: COVID-19, the drought and the economic crisis. Those who criticize will remember this period and will admit that it was one of the most professional Cabinets,” stated Igor Dodon.
