The latest heavy rain causes troubles to owners of cherry orchards. The cherries crack and the growers will be unable to sell them at a high price.

Contacted by IPN, cherry producer Mihai Cojocaru said that early in spring the trees must be irrigated and then the fruit must be sprayed with a special solution so that they do not crack when there is too much rain. If they are not splashed before they get ripe, they cannot be saved.

The producer said that this year the cherry trees yielded well and the fruit is exported mainly to Russia.

Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry Vasile Bumacov said different problems are encountered when it rains, but more problems are faced when it does not and the people should adapt themselves. “Regretfully, nature cannot be programmed so that it only rains or there is only sun,” said the official.

At the market cherries cost between 14 and 20 lei a kilogram. Sour cherries are sold for about 10 lei a kilogram.
