The air pollution in Chisinau and the aggravation of the ecological situation of the Bâc river must lead to the intensification of controls on economic agents in order to detect those who do not comply with the environmental norms, especially regarding water resources. The conclusion was drawn from public hearings held at the Parliament's Environment and Regional Development Commission, where representatives of several environmental organizations and environmental journalists have participated, IPN reports.

"The environmental situation in Chisinau is out of the ordinary, it needs to be solved as a whole, in a sound collaboration between the Government, the local public administration and donors," said Violeta Ivanov, the chairperson of the Commission, who specified that environmental protection should be declared a national priority.

The proposals that came from the representatives of environment organizations and environmental journalists concerned the increase in fines for those who outpour water in the Bâc river, the verification of the wastewater treatment plants and all the economic agents, as well as the involvement of researchers to check the quality of water in the Bâc river.

The chairperson of the Commission for environment and regional development, Violeta Ivanov, mentioned that the problem was the water level of the Bâc river. "The fact that everyone makes their pond in the back of his garden, blocking the tributaries of the Bâc river, leads to a decrease in the flow and hinders the process of self-purification", said the parliamentarian.

"We have laws, we have laboratories, we have institutions that have to carry out controls, we also have money, but the problems persist. The situation can no longer be tolerated and we can no longer wait. We will address the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Environment to set up a working group, which will also include members of the Academy of Sciences, that will come up with emergency solutions”, maintains Violeta Ivanov.

The Chairperson of the Environment and Regional Development Commission said that efforts should be made to neutralize the fetid odour of the sludge that had spread over the capital in a very short period. "Maybe we can dehydrate up to 70% of that sludge in order to get rid of that smell. I request maximum involvement of specialists for urgently finding solutions," said Violeta Ivanov.
