Veterans, members of the Unions of Ukrainians of Moldova and ambassadors Friday took part in a ceremony held to remember those who died in World War II at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”, Info-Prim Neo reports.
The Union’s head Svetlana Myslitski said that remembering those who were killed in war became a tradition full of meaning because there was no Soviet republic that was bypassed by the war. “The number of veterans decreases every year. We render homage to them and thank those owing to whom we now have sunny days,” she stated.
Ukrainian Ambassador in Chisinau Serhii Pyrozhkov said the commemoration ceremony is an homage paid to the victims of the war, the heroes and those who cared about the fate of the peoples. “Today it is two years since we planted here an alley with chestnut and snowball trees in memory of those who passed away,” said the diplomat.
Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Moldova Namig Aliyev said that it was a tradition to remember those killed in World War II. An alley of bushes will be planted this year at the Memorial Complex “Eternity”. It will bear the name of the Azerbaijani town Shusha. According to the official, most of the Azeri who fought in Moldova were from this town.
The ceremony to remember those killed in the war forms part of a program of activities dedicated to the 67th anniversary of victory over fascism. The event took place today because the memorial complex will be crowded on May 9 and because an alley of the Ukrainians was set up there on May 4, 2010.
