The Center of Forensic Medicine was endowed with modern investigation equipment within the project “Strengthening the forensic examination of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Moldova” that is financed by the EU and co-financed by UNDP Moldova, Info-Prim Neo reports. The Center’s vice director Andrei Padure said that owing to this project an enormous jump was made towards the contemporary technology used in forensic examination. This will increase the precision degree of the conclusions, will reduce the time needed to perform forensic examinations and will improve the conclusions of forensic experts. Minister of Health Andrei Usatii said that these changes will help improve forensic examination, in particular those related to accuracy of forensic findings. The Centre will be able to respond promptly and efficiently to the requests of law enforcement bodies. Nicola Harrington-Buhay, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Moldova, said that the valuable support and contribution of the European Union to the Forensic Project helped increase the institutional and professional capacities of the Centre of Forensic Medicine. “The changes in the activity of the Centre are already contributing to a better quality of forensic medical examinations and reports, and ultimately to eradication of torture in the Republic of Moldova and protection of human rights for everyone,” said Nicola Harrington-Buhay. Dirk Schuebel, Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Moldova, said they are glad that the project has tangible results, in particular the donation of the necessary equipment, and that the work of forensic doctors is more efficient and accurate. “We hope that this project will bring the Republic of Moldova closer to the EU standards,” said Dirk Schuebel. The budget of the project “Strengthening the forensic examination of torture and other forms of ill-treatment in Moldova” was €1 million, provided by the European Union (€800,000) and UNDP (€200,000).
