“We know the fragile political situation in Moldova, but the reforms must continue. The fight against corruption and the clarification of aspects concerning the banking crisis will lead to more intense cooperation with the European Union and to the creation of an auspicious environment favorable to investments,” EU Commissioner for Trade Cecilia Malmstrom said in a meeting with President Nicolae Timofti in the evening of October 22, IPN reports, quoting the presidential press service.

The European commissioner assured Nicolae Timofti that the EU remains a partner, supporter and friend of Moldova in the European integration process.

In this connection, the head of state voiced hope that the current pro-European coalition will focus on the European integration objectives of Moldova and the reforms will continue. “The current political situation does not allow us to concentrate and to pursue the European integration objectives, but without close relations with the EUI, Moldova does not have prospects,” stated Nicolae Timofti.

EU Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom came to Moldova on the occasion of the first anniversary of the signing of the Association Agreement between Moldova and the EU. The discussions between the two officials centered on the pace of reforms in Moldova and the need to continue them so as to advance the European agenda. There were also discussed the effects of the Association Agreement and of the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement on the Transnistrian region.

Moldova signed the Association Agreement with the European Union on June 27, 2014. On July 2, 2014, Moldova’s Parliament ratified the accord and this started to be implemented provisionally, together with the DCFTA, on September 1, 2014.
