The Central Election Commission (CEC) issued a statement signed by eight members of the nine, saying the Commission’s members dissociate themselves from the unilateral actions and statements of the Commission’s deputy head Stefan Uratu about the alleged rigging of the last elections in Moldova. In the October 4 protest in the Great National Assembly Square, Stefan Uratu said the last two elections in Moldova were rigged, IPN reports.

“The Central Election Commission is an independent and apolitical institution whose members swear not to make political statements and not to take political actions when they are appointed,” reads the statement. According to it, the Constitutional Court, the common law courts and all the national and international election observation missions confirmed the legality and correctness of the previous elections.

“The CEC recognizes and respects everyone’s right to assembly. But, judging by the slogans of the groups of protesters who put forward demands, including political ones, we consider that the participation of a CEC member in such events is totally unacceptable,” says the statement.  It also says that the CEC will ask Parliament to determine the compatibility of the statements made by Stefan Uratu with the status of CEC member.

The statement was signed by the Commission’s head Iurie Ciocan, secretary Andrei Volentir and members Vitalie Modranga, Vasile Gafton, Svetlana Gutu, Vadim Motsarski, Alexandru Simionov, and Eduard Raducan.
