Former prosecutor general Alexandr Stoianoglo was registered as a contender in the October 20 presidential election. A decision in this regard was taken by the Central Election Commission on Monday, IPN reports.

Alexandr Stoianoglo is the only one who brought the subscription lists with signatures to the Commission.

“According to the document for the receipt of the subscription lists presented by Mr. Alexandr Stoianoglo, the Central Election Commission received for verification 860 subscription lists with 25,088 signatures in support of Alexandr Stoianoglo as a candidate for the office of President of the Republic of Moldova, numerically declared by the candidate, which were collected from 27 administrative-territorial units of the second level,” said CEC member Rita Lefter-Simasco.

She noted that following the verification of the authenticity of data from 667 subscription lists containing 19,368 signatures of supporters, 1,711 signatures belonging to 1,443 supporters were declared null and void. “Thus, out of the 19,368 verified signatures 17,925 signatures are considered valid. According to the Electoral Code, in order to be registered by the CEC, all the candidates for the office of President submit subscription lists containing at least 15,000 and at most 25,000 signatures collected from at least half of the number of second-level administrative-territorial units,” stated Rita Lefter-Simasco.

At most 15 candidates are expected to contend in the upcoming presidential election. So far, the CEC has registered 12 initiative groups and is considering three more applications. The subscription lists with signatures are to be submitted by September 20.
