The Central Election Commission (CEC) nullified the early mayoral elections held in Chisinau in two rounds, on May 20 and June 3. A decision to this effect was adopted on June 29 by the vote of five CEC members of the seven attending. During the meeting, supporters of Andrei Nastase protested outside, IPN reports.

CEC president Alina Russu said that by nullifying the early local elections, the Commission executed court decisions that are irrevocable. The elections can be rerun in case of one round of voting. In this case, the court invalidated the results of both rounds of voting. Early mayoral elections cannot he held again either because the last year of mayoralty before the ordinary elections started and elections can no longer be announced. Under the Election Code, if the post falls vacant, early elections are held only twice a year – in spring and in autumn.

After the meeting, the leader of the Party “Platform Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase, whose election wasn’t validated, said the CEC is politically controlled and most of its members are blackmailable owing to their past. “We will continue to protest so that the election is validated. We will continue to demand the annulment of the mixed electoral system. We will continue to demand that the judges of the ordinary court, of the second court and of the Supreme Court of Justice be dismissed and prosecuted for serious crimes against the people of the Republic of Moldova,” stated the politician.

The leader of the Party “Action and Solidarity” Maia Sandu said it would have been normal for the CEC to postpone taking a decision given that some of its members didn’t understand how to exactly implement the court judgments. The decision taken today by the five members of the Commission is a political decision imposed by the dictatorial regime. This is one more proof that the state institutions play the game of an odious personage.

Maia Sandu and Andrei Nastase called on the people to come to the protest scheduled for July 1 and demand that the election of the mayor should be validated.
