CEC endorses bill enabling disabled persons to run in elections

The Central Election Commission (CEC) supports a bill drafted by the Ministry of Labor, Social Protection and Family by which the persons with disabilities are given the right to run and take part in elections, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The CEC held many debates on this subject because the people aren’t ready to accept such changes. They think that if a person with disabilities has the right to be elected, he/she will certainly be elected as head of state,” the Commission’s deputy chairman Stefan Uritu said in the meeting of the commission for implementing the National Action Plan on Human Rights for 2011-2014. Currently, the disabled persons are unable to run in elections owing to the restrictions imposed by the medical commission, which classes these persons as unable to hold a responsible post. Stefan Uritu also said that the human rights shouldn’t be limited, while the best solution is to exclude the provisions that subject the candidates to medical examination.
