The chairman of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Iurie Ciocan, whose term in office expires on February 11, as that of his colleagues, said the nominations for the post of CEC member are now done based on political criteria and this is no good. In an interview for Radio Free Europe, Iurie Ciocan stated that he wants to form part of the future Commission, but the decision will be taken by Parliament, IPN reports.
Iurie Ciocan noted that even if the tenure of the current CEC members expires today, the institution continues to work. “The continuity will be ensured by the current composition. All the duties will be carried out in accordance with the Election Code. We are just waiting for a new composition of the CEC to be confirmed,” he said.
He also said that the CEC includes upright and professional persons with rich knowledge in electoral matters, but when these persons are nominated by a party, society has questions. He noted that they worked honestly and correctly. “Our work was recognized by international and national observers and this is very important for the legality of power in Moldova,” he stated.
Iurie Ciocan said more changes should have been made to the party funding system and measures should have been taken to increase the level of political culture. “We would have carried out more awareness-raising and voter education campaigns if we had had more resources,” he said.
The current composition of the Central Election Commission was confirmed by Parliament for a five-year period on February 11, 2011.
