CEC approves plan of action for elections

The Central Election Commission (CEC) Tuesday agreed the plan of action on the organization and holding of the June 5 local elections. In the same meeting, it was decided to create 37 electoral districts of the second level. They will include the districts, the municipalities of Chisinau and Balti, and Bender town. For their part, the electoral districts of the second level will set up electoral districts of the first level, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Afterward, there will be constituted the district electoral councils. They will consist of seven to eleven persons named at the suggestion of district courts and district councils. The parliamentary parties will delegate by one representative to work on these councils.
CEC president Iurie Ciocan said the Deputy Prime Ministers, ministers, deputy ministers, district heads and deputy heads and the mayors and deputy mayors who will be registered as election runners will have to temporarily stop work. The MPs running in elections are allowed to continue their work during the election campaign.
According to the central electoral authority, up to 254,000 candidates will run for councilors and mayors in the June 5 elections. Thirty-one political parties and sociopolitical movements registered with the Ministry of Justice can take part in the elections.
An estimated 70 million lei will be spent on the elections.
There are almost 900 villages and towns in Moldova, which will hold local elections on June 5.
