“I accepted to be proposed for this post by a political party and this is the biggest mistake I made,” the director of the Center for Combating Corruption and Economic Crime (CCCEC) Viorel Chetraru said in an event held to mark 10 years of the creation of the institution on June 6, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Viorel Chetraru said that he was designated according to political principles and is thus unable to promote his own viewpoint. He stressed in this connection the necessity of urgently reforming the CCCEC and of depoliticizing it.
The bill on the reformation of the CCCEC was passed by Parliament in two readings on May 25. From October 1, the institution will be named the National Anticorruption Center. Minister of Justice Oleg Efrim said the proposed amendments are aimed at making the Center an independent body free from influence from the central public administration and at setting new criteria for naming and dismissing the institution’s director. The candidates for the post of director will be selected by the Parliament’s legal commission for appointments and immunity and the director will be confirmed to post by the parliamentary majority
Viorel Chetraru was named director of the CCCEC in 2009. The institution’s administration was appointed by the Democratic Party, in accordance with the agreement of the ruling alliance.
