The Constitutional Court (CC) rejected the request to suspend the law on the languages spoken on the territory of the Republic of Moldova that was made by MP Octavian Țîcu, the leader of the National Unity Party (PUN). According to the Court, the author didn’t present arguments as to the eventual damage and imminent and irreparable negative consequences of the implementation of this law, which are specified in the CC’s case law, IPN reports.

The Court held there is no connection between the alleged vitiation of the procedure for adopting the given law and the eventual damage and imminent and irreparable negative consequences of the implementation of the law.

As to the argument that major confusion can appear in the interpretation of the legal provisions of the given law, invoked by the author, the CC said this argument cannot stand as the author didn’t present reasonable substantiation for the risk, but only invoked it.

The CC’s judgment is definitive and cannot be appealed. It takes effect when it is adopted and is published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Moldova.

The National Unity Party on December 18 requested the Constitutional Court to pronounce on the law on the languages spoken on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. “The adoption of laws that favor the expansionist policy of the Russian Federation, that are aimed at ensuring the federalization of the Republic of Moldova and that destroy the economic and political relations of the Republic of Moldova shows that Igor Dodon, for the own survival and for maintaining the Russian interests, chose to destroy the state,” the PUN noted in a press release.

The bill on the languages spoken on the territory of the Republic of Moldova was adopted on December 16 by the MPs of the Party of Socialists and For Moldova Platform, which includes the MPs of the Shor Party after being given two readings.
