The Constitutional Court (CC) has given the go-ahead to amend the Constitution. A positive opinion was pronounced on Tuesday on the notification submitted by MPs of the parliamentary majority in connection with the national constitutional referendum on European integration, IPN reports.

CC president Domnica Manole, stated that the initiative to revise the Constitution by referendum does not exceed the material limits of revision of the Constitution set down in the supreme law and can be submitted to Parliament for examination.

The draft law to amend the Constitution says that the preamble of the Constitution is to be completed with two new paragraphs: “Reaffirming the European identity of the people of the Republic of Moldova and the irreversibility of the European path; Declaring the integration into the European Union as a strategic objective of the Republic of Moldova”.

Also, the bill provides for the completion of the Constitution with a new title – Title V prime – which is entitled “Integration into the European Union”. It provides for the joining by the Republic of Moldova of the founding treaties of the European Union and of the acts that revise the founding treaties of the European Union.

The referendum on the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union was announced by President Maia Sandu at an event in which the head of state informed that she intends to run for a new term in office.

According to a draft decision, the presidential election and the national constitutional referendum on European integration will take place on October 20. At the referendum, voters will be asked “Are you for the Republic of Moldova’s accession to the European Union?”.

The Constitutional Court’s opinion is final, cannot be appealed and enters into force on the date of its adoption and is published in the Official Gazette.
