The lawyers for ex-President Igor Dodon said the cases featuring their clients are political in character. Judging by the way in which the events develop, there are serious risks that the former head of state will not benefit from a fair trial. Pressure on judges is not excluded.
In a news conference held at IPN, lawyer Nicolae Posturusu said that it has been almost six months since Igor Dodon was placed under house arrest and the investigation was launched. “There are eight counts and the cases concerning three counts of these were sent to court. One case is pending at the Buiucani Court, which is an ordinary court, while two cases are pending at the Supreme Court of Justice,” stated the lawyer.
According to Nicolae Posturusu, he has monitored all the political statements of representatives of the executive and legislative, including the President, since the investigation was launched. Their assertions that Igor Dodon’s blame is clear and proven will be used to defend their client.
The lawyer noted that the recent leaks from the telegram account of a presidential adviser prove that Igor Dodon’s case is political. It goes to a recording made when Igor Dodon was under house arrest. This recording was added to the materials of the criminal case. Only the members of the investigation group should normally have access to such classified data. It is yet used to inform high-ranking officials. Therefore, there are risks that judges can be pressed into deciding this case swiftly.
Another lawyer Ion Vîzdoaga said the defense identified multiple violations and deviations from the procedural legislation, as regards the handling of evidence. Some of the charges do not have any legal basis and any connection with the events that happened in June 2019. “First of all, we, as the defense, reacted to the illegalities committed by the prosecutor who handles the case and manages about 50 investigation and prosecution officers and other prosecutors,” stated the lawyer.
Lawyer Petru Balan noted that leaks to the press about the case emerged on the very first days. But the prosecutors are obliged to ensure the confidentiality of procedures, especially because it was about searches. The members of the ex-President’s family were booed and humiliated as a result.
