The charges against the persons featured in the case of “turncoat MPs” were dropped, with the case being stopped after three years of investigation given the absence of evidence. The investigation continues into the accusations of unjust enrichment made against 13 former MPs, IPN reports.

The investigation was started by acting prosecutor general Dumitru Robu in October 28, 2019, based on suspicions of active corruption. Later, another 14 criminal case started by the Anticorruption Prosecutor’s Office against 14 former MPs of the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova were added to this case.

According to a denouncer, the MPs transmitted and received sums of €200,000 to €300,000 in November – December 2015 for leaving the parliamentary group of the Party of Communists of the Republic of Moldova and for voting for laws proposed by the Democratic Party. The accused denied any wrongdoing.

The statements made by ex-MP Elena Bondarenco, who died in July 2022, were the main evidence in this case. The statements were made public in 2016 and could not be substantiated by other evidence.
