A case of rabies in a cow was reported in in Novaci village of Calarasi distinct. The information was communicated by the owner of a flock near which a privately owned cow that showed signs of disease was put to feed on grass.

Head of the Animal Health Section of the Calarasi District Food Safety Division Constantin Stratan has told IPN that specialists travelled to the scene to take samples for analysis. The animal died the same day. The lab tests confirmed the presence of rabies. The body was burned and buried, while the place where this was pastured was disinfected. A number of goats, sheep and cows who were near the infected animal were vaccinated.

Three more cases of rabies, in dogs, were recorded in Moldova during June 13-26, namely in the districts of Causeni and Soroca and in Chisinau municipality.

Rabies is caused by a virus that affects the central nervous system, brain and backbone in humans and animals. The virus is spread by saliva. Humans can become infected when being bitten by sick wild and domestic animals.
