A case of rabies in a dog was recorded in Pohrebea village of Dubăsari district. The body of the animal was incinerated and the remains were buried, the National Food Safety Agency has said.

Rabies is a vaccine-preventable, zoonotic, viral disease affecting the central nervous system. Once clinical symptoms appear, rabies is virtually 100% fatal. In up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for rabies virus transmission to humans. Early symptoms can include fever and abnormal sensations at the site of exposure, followed by nausea, vomiting, violent movements, uncontrolled excitement, fear of water, an inability to move parts of the body.

To prevent cases of rabies, it is recommended vaccinating pets against rabies and not allowing domestic animals to wander. Children should be taught not to touch unknown animals  even if these seem friendly.

The National Food Safety Agency recommends taking measures to limit access to villages for foxes as these can spread rabies when they come into contact with domestic animals.

In November, the National Health Insurance Company allocated almost 628,000 lei from the prophylaxis measures fund to purchase the second lot of 5,000 rabies vaccine shots. The first lot of 7,000 shots was brought in April and cost over 879,000 lei.

A case of human rabies was reported in the municipality of Chisinau in the summer of 2019. A boy aged 11 died after he came into contact with an infected dog. The child was in the care of a woman who took this to a doctor in three weeks of the incident, when the boy had fever. The child was hospitalized, but could not be saved.
