The salary of the interim president of the Superior Council of Magistracy (SCM) is 38,000 lei after withholding all taxes, said the caretaker head Sergiu Caraman, who noted that this is the highest salary in the justice system of the Republic of Moldova. The judge said that following the assessment of integrity and professionalism, all judges who pass the vetting will receive twice higher salaries, IPN reports.

“My salary is not the salary of every judge in the country because I passed the pre-vetting procedure. The salary I received last month on the card amounted to 38,000 lei. It is the salary of the president of the Superior Council of Magistracy. It is the highest salary paid in the justice system in our country,” acting SCM president Sergiu Caraman stated in the program “The Shadow Cabinet” on JurnalTV channel.

According to him, after the vetting procedure, all judges in Moldova who will have passed the evaluation, will get twice higher salaries. Even if the salaries are doubled, the pays in Moldova’s justice system are the lowest in Europe.

“The salary of a judge of the Supreme Court of Justice depends on whether this passed the vetting procedure or not. Today, at the SCJ we have only one judge who passed the vetting procedure. And there are only two judges left from the previous composition of the Court. The salary of a SCJ judge who passed the evaluation would amount approximately to the salary I receive. A judge of the ordinary court, who passed the evaluation, has a salary of 28,000-30,000 lei. Before the vetting, the salary of a judge of the ordinary court was 17,000 lei. After the vetting, the salaries almost doubled. After the vetting, a judge’s salary will be decent. Even in the states in our immediate vicinity, Ukraine and Romania, the salary of a judge is twice as high as the salary of judges in our country. There is a study showing that through Europe, in our country the judges are paid the lowest salaries,” explained the interim president of the Superior Council of Magistracy.

According to experts of the Legal Resources Centre, who analyzed the pays of judges and prosecutors in Moldova, in 2024 the salaries of people who passed the vetting will increase considerably. Thus, after passing the external evaluation:

The judges of the Supreme Court of Justice will have a gross salary of 55,000 lei (50% raise);

The judges of the courts of appeal will have a gross salary of 43,000 lei (51% raise);

Prosecutors from specialized prosecutor’s offices will have a gross salary of 47,000 lei (72% raise);
