The carabineers starting with January 1, 2022 will take over from the police the duties of public order maintenance at meetings, cultural and sports events and other similar events and the public order restoration duties. A bill to put off this period for a year was given a final reading by Parliament, IPN reports.
The authors, a group of Socialist MPs, said that owing to the pandemic and the stopping of carabineer development programs, the Strategy for Reforming the Carabineer Troops for 2017-2020 could not be fully implemented by last December.
The gradual switchover to military service based on contract only was to be completed by December 31, 2020. In the created conditions, the General Carabineer Inspectorate will implement this measure progressively, until December 31, 2021.
The bill is designed to ensure the completion of the process of professionalizing the General Carabineer Inspectorate as the Government is expected to approve a plan of action to this effect, which is to be successfully carried out until December 31, 2021.
