The smallest village of the Autonomous Territorial Unit of Gagauzia will be heated with biomass. According to a communiqué from the Moldova Energy and Biomass Project, the public institutions in this village will use straw bales and modern fuel from biomass for heating next winter, Info-Prim Neo reports. “Moldova has significant potential to produce its own energy. The use of biomass and wind and solar energy and the steps taken to increase energy efficiency represent the start of a new industry for our country, which will have hundreds of workplaces,” said Minister of Economy Valeriu Lazar. Carbalia has a population of 555. It is located far from the district center and has only two public institutions – the kindergarten and the community center that houses the mayor’s office and the medical center. “The kindergarten had been heated with gas, while the community center wasn’t heated owing to the shortage of funds. The donors helped find the most advantageous solution – heating based on locally generated energy,” the mayor of Carbalia Constantin Gaidarji said during the launch of the heating system. From now on, the building of the community center will house the offices of the mayor’s office, the medical center and the post office so that all the public services will be concentrated in one place. The costs of €52,000 for installing the heating systems were covered by the four-year Energy and Biomass Project that is financed by the EU and co-financed by UNDP Moldova. The community contributed €7,800. The project total budget amounts to €14.5 million, provided by the European Union (€14m) and UNDP Moldova (€560,000).
