Canoeist Oleg Tarnovschi reaches Olympic semifinals

Oleg Tarnovschi finished 2nd in the first of the four qualification series for the 200m canoe sprint competition. The 24 year old scored a result of 40.852 seconds, IPN reports.

The Ukrainian-born athlete representing Moldova was bested by Spain’s  Benavides Lopez de Ayala, who managed a result of 40.610 seconds. Yesterday, Oleg’s brother, Serghei Tarnovschi, won the bronze medal in the 1000m canoe sprint event.

Today, August 17, Moldova will also be represented by wrestler Mariana Cherdivara-Esanu (59kg) and hammer thrower Serghei Marghiev. The latter’s sister, Zalina Marghieva, ranked 5th in the women’s hammer throwing finals.
