The Venice Commission confirmed the necessity of electoral reforms in Moldova and the Democratic Party (PDM) will continue to insist on this idea, after the future parliamentary elections, so that the people are able to choose the MPs directly, Deputy Head of Parliament Andrian Candu said Thursday, quoted by IPN.
He underlined that the PDM didn’t insist that the electoral system should be modified this year, but the party will continue to promote this bill within the future government coalition. “The recommendations of the Venice Commission show that we, those from the Democratic Party, addressed a very important and necessary subject. We will demand that the electoral system be changed and this issue will be discussed with our colleagues from the coalition in the new government too. When more than 50% of the population wants the electoral system to be modified, the PDM cannot ignore this thing,” stated Andrian Candu.
He added that the Communist Party is afraid of these changes.
The Venice Commission recommended that the system should not be modified in an electoral year and made suggestions for improving the relevant bill, especially as regards the financing of parties and election campaigns.
Under the bill put forward by the PDM, half of the lawmakers will be elected based on party lists, while the other half directly by the voters. Polls show the people mainly support the modification of the electoral system.
