Head of Parliament Andrian Candu assures that the future prosecutor general will be chosen according to the provisions contained in the new law on the prosecution service. He denied the reports that former prosecutor general Corneliu Gurin vacated his seat so as to allow the future prosecutor to be named in accordance with the current provisions. The Speaker made such statements in the talk show “Fabrika” on Publika TV channel, IPN reports.

“Many started to speculate that the leaving of Gurin is related to the period of transition in the implementation of the law and the new prosecutor general will be appointed in accordance with the old models. This is not true. Both Gurin, when he tendered his resignation, and experts said that this should be done according to the new law. There is matter that requires the amendment of the Constitution, but the other procedures – the selection and nomination – will be based on the new law that went through internal and international appraisal,” stated Andrian Candu.

He explained that if Parliament manages to amend the Constitution in half a year, the head of state will nominate the candidate that will be chosen at a strict contest. If not, proposing the candidate will remain within the remit of the Head of Parliament, but this will not name an own candidate, but a person who will go through all the procedures and stages of the contest and who will have the appropriate profile and professionalism. “We will not name the prosecutor general tomorrow. There will be the new law, which ensures transparency and professionalism,” said the Speaker.

As to Corneliu Gurin’s dismissal, Candu said that it was a well-thought-out and correct step. “When he took up, Gurin set the goal of contributing to the prosecution service reform as regards the drafting of the law, consultations, expertise. As Parliament ultimately managed to adopt the law, it was normal for him to take a step. I think it was a noble and courageous step,” he stated.

Corneliu Gurin left the post of prosecutor general a week ago, the next day after the new law on the prosecution service was adopted.
