The Association Agreement between Moldova and the European Union is needed not by the EU, but by Moldova. This document is necessary for modernizing the country. The Moldovan farmers must realize that the access to the European market should not be neglected, candidate for premiership Ion Sturza said in a meeting with farmers on December 30, IPN reports.

“Everyone criticizes the Association Agreement. It is criticized by bloggers and party activists who never read this document. I discussed with an activist of the Party of Communists who started to criticize the accord, but in several minutes I realized that he didn’t at least read it,” stated Ion Sturza.

According to him, the Association Agreement is a roadmap that is beneficial to Moldova. “The European meat and other products didn’t invade us. Only the Ukrainian products invaded us owing to the customs policy. The agreement is an asymmetric document. At least this word should be understood. The European market should not be ignored. What we produce for the European market is almost zero. Everyone speaks about quotas, but, for example, we exported only 30,000 tonnes of apples at a time when we could export 150,000 tonnes. This document poses risks neither to Moldova, nor to the EU,” stated Ion Sturza.

He noted that only the drought in agriculture cannot be controlled. However, if irrigation projects had been implemented, this wouldn’t have been a problem either. The other problems are related to the monetary policy.

In another development, the candidate for premiership said that he owns over 1,000 hectares of farmland and tried to develop a farming business, but failed in his attempt.

On January 4, Ion Sturza will present his government program in Parliament and will ask for the MPs’ vote of confidence. To be voted in, he needs at least 51 votes.
