The layer of ice on lakes and ponds is very thin and staying on ice is dangerous. The General Inspectorate for Emergencies launched a campaign to prevent cases of falling through ice as part of which rescuers will monitor the ponds and lakes in the country during the cold season, IPN reports.

Staying on ice is dangerous when positive and negative temperatures oscillate and if the layer of ice is of only 8-10 cm. Rescuers warn the grownups not to leave the children unsupervised near waters. The parents should not allow their children to go skiing and skating and to walk on such ice.

If the ice breaks and the person falls into the water, this should try and climb onto the ice with the chest by keeping the hands in front and should crawl towards the bank when on ice.

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergencies, four persons fell through ice in 2018.

The State Hydrometeorological Service said the layer of ice will gradually disappear on waters. The ice is thin and fragile and walking on it is dangerous.
