Cahul district head remains under house arrest

The head of Cahul district Marcel Cenușă remains under house arrest. The Cahul Appeals Court upheld the first court’s decision to place him under house arrest for a 30-day period, IPN reports.

Members and sympathizers of the Party of Socialists of which Marcel Cenușă is a member protested in front of the Appeals Court and the Cahul District Council. According to them, the suspension of Marcel Cenușă from the post was to be proposed in the Council’s meeting so as to name a suitable person as acting head of the district. The meeting didn’t take place as the quorum was not present.

The head of Cahul district and another eight persons, among who are employees of the Cahul District Council, a mayor and businessmen, were arrested on charges of passive corruption, active corruption and abuse of power. They are accused of causing damage of over 1 million lei to the district budget after fixing tender contests. When the period of the arrest expired, the Marcel Cenușa was placed under house arrest.

The mayor of Moscovei commune of Cahul district and the manager of a fictional company will be under judicial control for a month, while one of the functionaries of the Cahu District Council’s Construction Division was set free. The manager of another company featured in this case was placed under house arrest for 30 days.


The Cahul Appeals Court upheld the first court’s decisions regarding all the suspects.
