The bill drafted by the Ministry of Finance, by which the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) will redirect a part of its profit to the state budget to cover the costs incurred by the people following the bank fraud, was discussed intensively and will be examined by the Cabinet on February 19, Prime Minister Ion Chicu announced after a meeting with the President and Parliament Speaker, IPN reports.

Premier Chicu said that according to the situation for 2019, the redirected amount will come to 215-220 million. The sum totals 6 billion lei if multiplying this amount by the number of years during which the given debt is to be serviced.

President Igor Dodon informed about this initiative a week ago. Experts of the Independent Think Tank “Expert-Grup” said such a move encroaches upon the central bank’s independence, compromises the institution’s capitalization efforts and does not represent a viable solution to the problem of the state debt generated by the bank fraud.
