Cabinet supports enshrining of European course in Constitution

The Cabinet approved the legislative initiative to amend the preamble and Article 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova and stipulate Moldova’s European integration aspirations and the promotion of its orientation to the European democratic system of values in these, IPN reports.

The bill provides that the procedure for subscribing to the founding treaties of the European Union will be defined by Parliament in an organic law.

On December 11, 2017, the Constitutional Court endorsed the bill to amend and supplement the Constitution and enshrine the European course in it that was submitted by 36 MPs. The Court reminded that Moldova’s aspirations to establish political, economic, cultural relations and relations in other areas of common interest with the European states and the orientation to the European democratic system of values are stipulated in the Declaration of Independence, which is the state founding document.

The bill can be adopted after at least six months of the presentation of the proposal to amend the Constitution.
