The Cabinet approved the draft law to introduce postal voting for this autumn’s elections in the United States and Canada. The decision comes against the backdrop of a protest that is to be staged by the opposition at the Central Election Commission, which is to also pronounce on this bill, IPN reports.
Minister of Justice Veronica Mihailov-Moraru said that the bill was drafted by a group of MPs and is designed to create the necessary normative framework for piloting postal voting. “Thus, as an alternative method, it is proposed to allow exercising the right to vote abroad by using also postal services. The bill proposes piloting postal voting as an alternative to existing traditional methods. Thus, this new method will be applied for the first time, based on the practice of other states,” noted the minister.
“The Cabinet must and creates voting opportunities for the diaspora so that we ensure the possibility of easier participation in democratic processes, which are fundamental for the state,” said Prime Minister Dorin Recean.
Also today, starting at 4 p.m., the Central Election Commission is to examine the opinion on the draft law on postal voting piloting. For 1 p.m., the Bloc of Communists and Socialists announced a protest that is to be mounted in front of the institution. The opposition harshly criticized this bill, noting that it seriously violates the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova as it discriminates against the majority of voters in relation to the minority in the states where the initiative is piloted.
