The Cabinet approved a bill that regulates the creation, liquidation and management of human crematories and the cremation procedure, IPN reports.
Minister of Environment Iordanca-Rodica Iordanov said that there are no human crematories in Moldova given the absence of the necessary regulatory framework. The citizens use for the purpose crematories in Ukraine and Romania.
Under the bill, human crematories can be founded by the central public authorities, the local public authorities or under public-private partnerships. The authorization and functioning standards, the technical, sanitary and environmental norms for human crematories will be worked out, updated and monitored by the Ministry of Health and the Ministry Environment.
The cremation will be performed only based on death certificates or another document confirming the death, with the consent of the police. It will be banned cremating unidentified persons, persons for whom a death certificate wasn’t issued and foreigners who died in Moldova, in the absence of the consent of the consular office in Moldova of the country whose nationality the person who died held.
The sponsors of the bills are PAS MPs Oazu Nantoi and Marcela Nistor. The legislative proposal is to be examined and adopted by Parliament.
A bill to build a crematory in Chisinau was proposed in 2018. The municipality of Chisinau allotted a lot that was 8 ha in area and was situated close to Saint Lazarus Century for the purpose. However, the intention was abandoned following debates on the bill held in parliamentary commissions.
