The property rights over the site of the former Cahul airport are transferred to a private person. There is no airport on that land and there is no infrastructure to operate commercial flights. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) made these clarifications following an advertisement that the Cahul International Airport is put up for sale for €2.5 million, IPN reports.

The advertisement, posted at the end of September, says that the airport is located in the south of the Republic of Moldova, 160 km from Chisinau and 9 km from Cahul. The land area is 109 ha. The area is fenced and guarded. On the territory of the airport, there is a runway with a length of 1,883 meters.

The Civil Aviation Authority specifies that the Cahul airport was founded in 1987. In 1996, it was transferred under the management of the local public authorities. The status of “international airport: was granted by a government decision in 2002, but this change was not followed by the necessary investments to improve the infrastructure of the former airport.

In 2004, the airport was reorganized into a joint venture with the participation of the company “Intrade Management LTD”, but this structure was affected by multiple irregularities. In 2012, following a dispute over the non-payment of a debt, all the assets were transferred to the creditor. In 2015, the joint venture “Cahul International Airport” was liquidated.

The infrastructure on the land of the former airport is in a critical condition. The take-off and landing runway, taxiway and platform are in need of major repairs. The essential elements of infrastructure for the safe operation of flights are missing, the Civil Aviation Authority also said, concluding that “at the moment, there is no airport on the mentioned land and there is no infrastructure necessary to operate commercial flights”.
