There is a serious shortage of water in the Byk River, upstream the municipality of Chisinau. 45% of the springs of the river in Calarasi and Straseni districts are used by the population for different purposes, while the remaining quantity of water is polluted. The recent high temperatures also determined a reduction in the level of water in the Byk. On some portions, the water disappeared, IPN reports, quoting the Chisinau public utility SA ”Apa-Canal Chisinau”.

The company considers that a real solution for remedying the situation is to rehabilitate the water treatment station in stages, in accordance with the feasibility project worked out by the French company Seureca with EU funds. The water in the river is polluted by litter and discharged wastewater because there is no sewerage system and the local treatment stations do not work.

The first stage includes the rehabilitation of the primary and secondary decantation equipment and biological reservoirs, building of new pre-treatment installations, thickening of the excess of biological mud, production of electrical and thermal energy, mechanical dehydration of the mud and its transportation to farmland as organic fertilizer. Within the second stage, the station will be fully modernized.
