The Communist Party (PCRM) is against the Antidiscrimination Law because the government aims to adopt it only in order to fulfill a point in the Moldova – European Union Action Plan, Communist MP Sergiu Sarbu said in a meeting of the Investigative Journalists Club themed “Improved Antidiscrimination Law – What are its chances of being adopted?”, Info-Prim Neo reports. “The phenomenon of discrimination existed and will exist in Moldova. It may seem that this law will solve all the problems, but this won’t happen because they inefficiently implement the legislation in our country. Moldova signed international agreements that are superior to any adopted law, but their principles are not obeyed in our country. If the authorities had respected all the documents, we wouldn’t have had discriminated persons. But they respect not even the Constitution,” said the lawmaker. According to Sergiu Sarbu, the PCRM has nothing against the phrase ‘sexual orientation’ on which the opponents of the law focus, but wants certain limits to be set as regards this orientation and a definition to be formulated. Nadejda Hriptievschi, lawyer at the Legal Resources Center, said that all the inhabitants of Moldova will benefit from this law. The initial antidiscrimination bill was drafted in 2008. Nadejda Hriptievschi does not agree with the PCRM’s position that the authorities only want to fulfill certain conditions. The lawyer considers that the aim of this initiative is to provide a clear mechanism that the discriminated persons can use to defend their rights. If the authors of the bill define ‘sexual orientation’, as the PCRM demands, they will have to define all the 13 discrimination criteria. The participants in the meeting also said that it is not right to regard the law as a condition imposed by the EU as it is a document that aims to improve the lives of the persons discriminated on different grounds.
