The owner of a number of retail outlets based in Chisinau was arrested for smuggling. Prosecutors found a number of consignments of textiles without documents of origin in his storehouse, IPN reports.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Organized Crime and Special Cases, searches at the storehouse were carried out after a truck involved in the transportation of contraband was stopped in Giurgiulești. The vehicle was escorted to the “Cricova” customs terminal where over 700 kg of articles of underwear were found in it as a result of searches. These didn’t have accompanying documents.
It was determined that the goods were brought from Turkey and were to be taken to the storehouse of the arrested businessman. They were smuggled and hidden among other goods transported in a transit regime.
The contraband goods found in the truck and at the businessman’s storehouse were estimated at 3 million lei. Most of the smuggled goods had the marks of famous brands on them.
Smuggling carries a penalty of at most ten years in jail.
